Bach and Beyond: The Music of Leipzig
April 6 at 8 pm
The internationally acclaimed Calmus Ensemble celebrates the musical heritage of their native city Leipzig, Germany. The ensemble, composed of soprano Anja Lipfert and graduates of Leipzig’s famed St. Thomas Boy’s Choir, brings an exquisite lyricism and masterful intonation to this evening’s concert of a cappella music.
Monteverdi’s Vespers
April 13 at 8 pm
The award-winning University of Utah Singers under the direction of Dr. Brady Allred performs Claudio Monteverdi’s monumental Vespers of the Blessed Virgin. Musicologist Jeffrey Kurtzman of Washington University will discuss Monteverdi’s choral masterpiece at a pre-concert lecture on Sunday, April 13 at 7:00 pm.
A Tapestry of African-American Song
April 20 at 8 pm
Acclaimed Boston Soprano Christina DeVaughn joins the Salt Lake Chamber Singers under the direction of Lyle Archibald in a stirring performance of Spirituals, hymns, and American folk songs. Concert’s highlights include such favorites as Shenandoah, There is a Balm in Gilead, and Ride On, King Jesus.
Vivaldi, Verdi & Vaughan Williams
April 27 at 8 pm
The Cathedral Choir and Chamber Orchestra under the direction of Gregory Glenn perform Antonio Vivaldi ‘s Dixit Dominus R807, recently rediscovered in 2005. The concert also features two of Giuseppe Verdi’s Quattro Pezzi Sacri as well as Ralph Vaughan Williams’s 1911 setting of the poetry of George Herbert. The Five Mystical Songs for Baritone, Chorus and Orchestra features soloist Tyler Oliphant.
Olivier Messiaen and The Language of Mystical Love

In celebration of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Olivier Messiaen, Cathedral Organist Dr. Douglas O’Neill performs two of the French composer’s most profound works for organ: L’Ascension: Quatre Méditations Symphoniques and Les corps glorieux: Sept visions brèves de la vie des ressuscités. Cathedral Music Director Gregory Glenn will share his insight into the one of the 20th century’s most significant composers.
Red Rock Rondo: A Musical Trek through Zion Canyon
May 11 at 8 pm
Folk musicians Kate MacLeod and Hal Cannon join chamber folk music ensemble blue haiku (Phillip Bimstein, Charlotte Bell, Flavia Cervino-Wood and Harold Carr) in performing Red Rock Rondo. Drawing upon an array of musical styles and a lively assortment of instruments, the group celebrates in song the life and history of Zion National Park.
The Madeleine Award Dinner

The 2008 Madeleine Award for Distinguished Service to the Arts and Humanities will be presented to Gregory Glenn, Director of Music and Liturgy a the Cathedral of the Madeleine and Founder and former Director of the Madeleine Choir School. The dinner will be held at The New Yorker. For reservation please call 328-8941.

The Madeleine Festival of the Arts and Humanities was formally instituted in 1988 by then cathedral rector Msgr. M. Francis Mannion. A wide variety of musical, dance, visual arts and humanities events comprise the festival, normally beginning the Sunday after Easter and running for seven consecutive Sunday evenings at 8 PM. The Madeleine Festival is presented free of admission charge and is open to the general public. It is funded by grants from the Utah Arts Council, Salt Lake County Zoo Arts & Parks, The Salt Lake City Arts Council, corporate and foundation support, and the support of private individuals in the community.
All performances are free and open to the public.
