Sacramental Preparation, Education, and Formation Sacramental Preparation Baptism The Sacrament of Baptism for infants is celebrated every other month in English and by arrangement in Spanish. Typically, the Rite of Baptism is celebrated on Sundays at 1:30 PM. As with all parishes, Baptism at the Cathedral is reserved for members of the Cathedral parish, which means the family either lives within the geographical boundaries of the parish, or is registered in the parish and appears in the parish census. At least one parent must be Catholic. It is only required to have one Godparent, but if there are two one must be male and the other female. Godparents must be baptized and confirmed Catholics, who are 16 years-old or older. If married, Godparents must be married in the Church. Like parents, Godparents must receive instruction and provide a letter from their parish attesting that have been instructed and they meet the criteria, given above, in order to fulfill their responsibilities. Two preparation classes and a pastoral meeting for parents are required for preparation. Classes are held the two Fridays prior to the Baptism. The classes begin at 7:00 PM and go to 8:30 PM and are held in the Adult Religious Education Room, located on the lower level of the Cathedral. For more information about Baptism in English, please contact Deacon Scott Dodge via e-mail, at sdodge@saltlakecathedral.org or by phone, 328-8941. For Spanish-language Baptism and preparation, please contact Fr. Omar Ontiveros (328-8941). Becoming Catholic If you are an adult desiring to become a Catholic, or interested in learning more about the Catholic Church, you are invited to participate in the Order of Christian Initiation for Adults (OCIA). The process begins in September of each year and continues through the Season of Easter. OCIA meets weekly on Thursday evenings from 7:00-9:00 PM in the Adult Religious Education room on the lower level of the Cathedral. The Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and the Eucharist are celebrated at the Easter Vigil. We also have an Order of Christian Initiation for Children (OCIC), which is for children in fourth grade through eighth grade who need to complete their Christian Initiation. This class prepares young people for the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist. This class meets on Sunday mornings from 9:40-10:40 AM on the lower level of the Cathedral. For information about becoming Catholic or finding out more about the Catholic faith, please contact Deacon Dodge via e-mail, at sdodge@saltlakecathedral.org or by phone, 328-8941 Confirmation For practicing Catholic adults, who for some reason or another, were never confirmed, there is a Diocesan Adult Confirmation held each year on the Vigil of the Feast of Pentecost, which, this year, is Saturday, 26 May. Please contact Deacon Dodge via e-mail, at sdodge@saltlakecathedral.org or by phone, 328-8941, sometime during Lent, which begins 21 February, to inquire about instruction for Confirmation. Marriage The Sacrament of Matrimony is celebrated at the Cathedral on Saturdays at 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM. The Sacrament of Matrimony is not celebrated during the holy season of Lent. Cathedral Parishioners must contact Father Omar Ontiveros at least six months in advance to begin the preparation for the Sacrament of Matrimony. Catholics who are not members of the Cathedral parish inquiring about the use of the Cathedral should also contact Fr. Ontiveros. A packet containing guidelines and other information may be obtained through the parish office (328-8941.) Education and Formation Adult Formation Adult Catholics who desire to learn more about their faith are invited to participate in a variety of Adult Education & Formation experiences. First, we have an Adult Religious Education class that meets on Sunday morning in the Adult Religious Education room on the lower level of the Cathedral. Our class meets from 9:40-10:40 AM, which is the same time our Children’s Religious Education classes and Youth Group meet. We also have a Cathedral Book Club that meets monthly as well as occasional Scripture studies. During Advent and Lent we hold a series and, from year-to-year, a variety of Formation events. We plan to revive the McDougall Lecture series in the near future. This series is named after Monsignor William H. McDougall, longtime Rector of the Cathedral who was a noted journalist and author. In addition, we plan to intensify formation in the area of Christian parenting in support of the family, which is the domestic Church. For information about any of these programs, please contact Deacon Dodge, via e-mail, at sdodge@saltlakecathedral.org or by phone, 328-8941. Children’s Education Children's Religious Education for children in Kindergarten through grade 6 takes place on Sundays from 9:40 AM until 10:40 AM during the school term. Classes are held on the lower level of the Cathedral. Children of the Cathedral parish and Youth Education & Formation Youth Ministry gatherings for young people in grades 7 through 12 occur on Sundays from 9:40-10:40 AM during the school year. The Diocesan Youth Camp is held annually in the summertime. Activities, discussions and treats take place in the Youth Group room located on the lower level of the Cathedral. Occasional field activities will occur on other days in place of the Sunday meeting. For information, please contact Jennifer Loudiana, Coordinator at 463-0697.
